When we got Moose, I thought yeah a retriever of course he will like the hose. Well, Moose not only didn’t know how to swim when we got him, the first time a washed my car with him lovingly next to my side, I brought out the hose and he ran into the house for cover. Three years later he still does, but at least he swims now, in fact we can’t keep him out of the water. When we got Hoss, I thought what are the chances a Great dane would like the hose? I mean they are not known to be water dogs, in fact they don’t even swim really, ( they are too barrel chested to float properly in the water) Well Hoss can’t get enough of it. The harder the hose is blasting the better he likes it. He bites at the water and jumps at the hose like a puppy. I love watching Hoss do this, the only sad part is in the corner of my eye, I see Moose running towards the house.

100 awesome dog things #95

100 Awesome Dog things

#95

Dogs that howl at sirens

At the dog park the other day, an ambulance rushed by with its siren blaring and Kaiser a cute little schnauzer started to howl along with the sound. Looking at Kaiser, he had a look that he was generally helping alert everyone and aiding to the response time for the ambulance. Us humans at the park giggled and almost started howling ourselves at the site of little dog snout pointed to the clouds oblivious to our laughing. Wouldn’t it be great if we could howl at sirens like dogs? Of course people would probably laugh at us too, but wouldn’t it make you feel like you were helping the ambulance.

100 awesome dog things #96

100 Awesome Dog things

#96

Dogs that don’t wear outfits or costumes.

Dogs are born with a coat, do they really need to wear a designer Gucci (or Pucci) one too? When I was training dogs in Vancouver, I saw, especially in Yaletown, dogs mostly small dogs sometimes in purses (another issue all together) with more outfits and accessories than I have. On most of their faces I saw that look, you know the one where if they could talk they would say “I hate this, you are embarrassing me, and I don’t like pink!”. There is even a website where you can get wigs for your dog. Could you imagine dreadlocks on a mexican hairless?. Yah mon. The fact is that when dogs wear clothes that cover their back, tail, ears, or head it limits their ability to contact with other dogs because the other dogs can’t see their body language which can result in aggression and bad behaviour. Big dogs with bandana’s well not so bad. so I thought. I have to admit my first Golden Retriever Clancy went to the groomer once around Christmas time and they put a bandana on her (with dog bones on it) and a cologne that made her smell like a sugar cookie. She gave me “that look”. Need less to say, the bandana came off right away, and she had a bath when we got home.

100 awesome dog things #97

100 Awesome Dog things

#97

Dogs who look like their owners.

We all know someone who looks like their dog don’t we? I think deep down we do pick dogs that kind of remind us of ourselves, either by looks or personality. When my 6 foot 4 husband said he wanted a Great dane, I was not surprised. The thing is he looks more like our golden retriever Moose. They both have red hair and a dopey look on their face most of the time (which one of the reasons I love them both). Now if there was a red headed Great Dane I know my husband would definitely pick one for our next dog.

100 awesome dog things #98

100 Awesome Dog things

#98

Dogs watching TV.

Some dogs do it and when they do it is funny. When we got Moose we were upstairs watching t.v. on our giant screen,( I mean 120 inches of screen) when there was a show on with geese flying. Well, Moose ran at the t.v. and tried to chase them of course because he is a retriever and the geese were larger than life literally. Moose still loves to watch t.v. mostly Dog Town, The Dog Whisperer, and Rescue Ink, but also shows with cats. Yesterday Brody, the Great Dane pup who is staying with us heard the t.v. (Moose was watching Dog Town) and couldn’t figure out where all the “dog sounds” were coming from. He sat down and started watching the show, and for any of you who have ever seen a Great Dane sit, they sit on the furniture like a human, bum on the seat and feet on the floor. Hoss our Great dane is not much of a t.v. watcher, he just slept on the couch with the remote under his paw. Gee I wonder who changed the channel to the dog show? Hmmmmm?

100 awesome dog things #99

100 Awesome Dog things

#99

Spooning with your dog

O.K,O.K., not the romantic kind of spooning you do with your significant other, but you know when your dog sneaks up on your bed (or maybe he is allowed on it), they always like to lay in the middle and stretch out as far as they can. Hopefully you have a big bed, and a small dog, but when you have a big dog and a not so big bed it can be a problem, especially if you share your bed with a partner, and a dog. There is nothing like cuddling with your dog. They keep you warm, they keep you feeling safe, and comfort you on a bad day. It’s when your 185lb dog sneaks on the bed, you wake up to the sound of him snoring and find your husband spooning him. Both Hoss (our Great dane) and John my husband always have a peaceful look on their face when I catch them like this. Most woman if they found their man in bed with someone would yell, YOU BITCH, but thankfully Hoss is a male, and I find it kind of endearing.

100 awesome dog things #100

I was checking out the blog of Neil Pasricha 1000 Awesome things http://1000awesomethings.com/the-top-1000/ and thought there are so many things about dogs that would fit into the awesome category, so I have decided to do my own “ Awesome” Dog things list. You know the smell I am talking about. Not the smell of dog pee and half eaten toys, but that earthy slightly sweet aroma of mother’s milk mixed with a bit of puppy spit and who knows what else. That unforgettable puppy perfume that waifs from them when they cuddle with you and they lick your face. If I could, I would have bottled that smell and sniffed it when my dog Moose rolled in a dead seal at the beach in White Rock last summer, or when my neighbour’s dog Blue got sprayed with a skunk and ran around the yard (and into their house, but that is another story), or when Hoss went into the garbage and dragged out that unidentified container of green slime that was hiding in the back of the fridge I just threw away. I just think of that new puppy smell from when I was twelve and my parents let me pick out a 9 week old puppy from a litter of 6 sitting in an old cardboard box at the flea market. I picked the smelliest one.

Welcome

<dc:subject>Dog Blog</dc:subject>

Hello and welcome to the Commander K9 blog. As I write this, I have 3 dogs sleeping around me, snoring in unison. Our new house guest Sam is a little flat, but it is his first day with us, and just the fact that he feels comfortable to have a nap is a good sign. They say that when a dog sighs, it means they are happy and content, if that is the case, Sam is enjoying himself at the Commander K9 house. Sam is a very sweet 10 year old Great Dane. His humans are taking a trip to China, and have never left Sam a kennel before, so this is a new adventure for him, I think he is enjoying it so far.
